An op-ed piece in The Huffington Post a few days ago really got me to thinking: it has been a long time since we had a real First Family in the White House, and the Obamas will represent American “Family Values” in a unique and beautiful way. In the past we have had “families” and “married couples” at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., but starting in 2009, we will have the honor of having young children AND a true marriage/partnership between two stable adults!

In my memory: the Eisenhowers–I don’t really remember their children.; the Kennedys with Caroline and John-John, the Johnsons with Linda and Lucy; the Nixons with Julie and Tricia (I remember the wedding); the Fords with their four children; the Carters with Amy and their two much-older sons; theReagans, with all of their children and step-children; the 1st Bushes–well we know about their “children”; the Clintons with Chelsea–I really do like Chelsea; the 2nd Bushes and their twins.

But now we will certainly have Barack and Michelle Obama with Malia and Sasha and Michelle’s mom living in the White House! What a beautiful young and vibrant family! So loving, so grounded…just a few weeks ago,Barack said that before he jumped on a plane to do a political rally he walked Malia to school and helped her with her first combination lock! Just “regular” folks…it will be refreshing and beautiful at the same time.
