Obama Transition Choices: 1 Down, 14 to Go!
Eric Holder, Attorney General Nominee
One of the most important tasks for President-elect Barack Obama during the Transition is the selection of the Cabinet members. “The Cabinet” as it is called, is not exactly listed in the U.S. Constitution, but the President is supposed to name advisers and staff. President George Washington started “The Cabinet” with four members; now there are twenty-three Cabinet Members.
This series will be continuous as President-elect Obama selects his Cabinet members, the fourteen Cabinet “Secretaries” and the Attorney General must be approved by Congress. The Huffington Post today reported that Eric Holder has been nominated as Attorney General.
The Cabinet Secretaries to be chosen are:
Secretary of State
Secretary of the Treasury
Secretary of Defense
Attorney General
Secretary of the Interior
Secretary of Agriculture
Secretary of Commerce
Secretary of Labor
Secretary of Health and Human Services
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development
Secretary of Transportation
Secretary of Energy
Secretary of Education
Secretary of Veterans Affairs
Secretary of Homeland Security
The Cabinet members as listed are in the “line of succession” after the President, Vice-President, Speaker of the House, and President pro tempore of the Senate in the case of death or resignation. Therefore, one Cabinet member is always absent from any instances (even the Inauguration and State of the Union Address) where all the rest of the Cabinet members may be; in an “undisclosed location” in case all of the rest of the Executive Branch are killed at once. That absent Cabinet member is called the “designated survivor” and would immediately become President of the United States of America.

I’d like to see Hilary or Bill Richardson as secretary of state. Or Bill Richardson as secretary of defense. Either way he has experience and will make a major impact.
