The Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School Symphonic and Marching Band brought down the house in China! Well, almost…the band drew such a crowd just during their warm-up that the Beijing police canceled their concert at the Great Wall for security reasons! Later, a thunder and lightning storm kept the band members at the hotel. But spirits stayed high, as the students from Detroit continued to make us proud, mingling and singing with Chinese children.

In a post last week, I told you about the exciting trip to Beijing for the band, and the extraordinary fund-raising efforts by the Detroit Metroplex Community; how regular people and business leaders, churches and community groups, beauty and barber shops, drivers stopping to buy bottled water and candy made this $400,000 trip possible.

Although the band wasn’t able to play at the Great Wall, it has several other concerts on its schedule during its nine-day stay in China. On Saturday, in Shijiazhuang, the band, directed by Mrs. Victoria Miller, will play in their second youth cultural exchange concert.
