What is a Black Liberal Boomer?
As an American of African and Native American (Choctaw) descent, I see American history, politics, and current events through a unique prism. I was born and raised in a middle class two-parent home Detroit Michigan during the 50s and 60s; a time of great cultural upheaval in the United States. My blog and my posts will reflect my views and my upbringing.
I always have been, and always will be a proud Liberal Democrat. I never have, and never will allow myself to be defined by the negative stereotypes of “liberal” and/or “Democrat” that many in the ultra-conservative wing of the Republican party attempt to use as smears. I will define myself, and use this forum to clarify who liberals are, what they do, and what they stand for.
I am also part of the early “Baby Boomer” generation; as well as the “sandwich generation”, helping to take care of both my elderly parents and my early and mid-adult children. As such, there are policies and viewpoints and events that particularly effect those in my age group and stage in life. I will specifically address these, also.
I am also celebrating my 10th wedding anniversary with my 2nd husband on September 11th–yes, September 11th is my wedding anniversary. After a lot of hard work, and keeping our children’s interests first and foremost, my first husband and his second wife and children, and my second husband and I have made both of our families (total six children, 4 girls and 2 boys aged 17 - 37) one big happy blended family. No, really–it’s amazing. I will do some posts on that phenomenon, too.
I am looking forward to sharing this new blog with you. Feel free to leave comments; I also look forward to building a community.
